Looking for an interesting theme for your bedroom? Why not delve into the exotic world of tropical themes, and use Hawaiian decor to create your own personal paradise.
If you are a more conservative decorator, or have never decorated in a theme before, a Hawaiian or island theme may seem a little excessive for your bedroom. You can make your bedroom as basic or extravagant as you want because there are many elements in Hawaiian decor.
The following are some ideas for you to think about when putting together such a theme for your bedroom.
Walls. You can color to your walls in numerous ways. If you wish to keep it simple and easy, then a clean neutral shade of brown like light taupe or sand or a cool white are great paint alternatives. Think about painting the wall a brilliant but soft yellow, green, or blue for a more dramatic wall. Enhance the look even more by adding copper wall sculptures. On the other hand, if you are feeling creative, you can paint a mural featuring a beach scene, or purchase a ready made mural, such as a Hawaiian sunset, and display it on the wall. In addition, don’t forget, there are always palm tree, palm leaf, and floral wallpaper if you like prints.
Floors. Deep red-brown, chestnut, or sand colored wood floors are the perfect compliment for any Hawaiian decor. If you do not have the budget for hardwood floors, go for laminate flooring instead, which is cheaper. Ideal selections for carpet in the room includes tones of brown, ocean blue, and sea green.
Moldings and Doors. In order to blend nicely with the rest of the room, these elements should be in tones of dark and rich brown like cherry or oak.
Window treatments. The best window treatments for Hawaiian decor are wooden shutters, or bamboo blinds. You may choose to add some character to the window treatments by installing a sheer white curtain, or you might leave them as is.
Lighting. A wood ceiling fan, especially one with blades in the shape of palm leaves, is ideal for the Hawaiian theme. If a ceiling fan is out of the question, opt for any other basic ceiling light, as your goal is to not make the ceiling light a focal point of the room. For night stands, fun lamps featuring pineapples, hula dancers, or palm trees are perfect.
Bedding. In regards to bedding, you essentially have two options. Either choose a solid color for your quilt or comforter, or choose a print. If a solid color is selected, then you can dress up your bed by bringing in some printed toss pillows. If you do select a print such as orchids or palm leaves be sure to choose toss pillows in solid colors. It is important that the room doesn’t carry too many prints or it will appear too loud and overwhelming.
Furniture. Wood furniture is definitely a good choice. Instead of the expense of solid wood furniture, choose dark faux wood furniture or bamboo. So don’t overwhelm your space with furniture; the goal here is to create an open space. Be sure that you include all required furniture items first (I.E. bed, dresser, chest of drawers and bedside table). Add end tables, shelves, and other furniture if you still have the space for them.
Accessories – Other Hawaiian decor you may wish to add to the room include:
• Palm plant (real or artificial).
• Vase of artificial orchids.
• wall metal art or contemporary metal wall decor of palm trees, orchids or palm leaves.
• Authentic Hawaiian art.
• Pictures of palm trees, orchids, a beach, Hawaiian architecture, hula girl, or actual framed photographs taken in Hawaii, etc. It is important to note that wooden frames are best for wall art or pictures.
• Area rug with flower or palm leaf.
• Plain or decorative bamboo or wooden screen.
• Throw pillows with floral or palm leaf pattern.
• Bamboo chair.
When it comes to using Hawaiian decor for your bedroom, there are plenty of options to choose from. Your decisions will be based on your budget and your own personal taste. Therefore, make sure you shop around and look for different items before making any final decisions. And finally, trust your own judgment and don’t be afraid when embellishing your bedroom. Take your time, and have fun!
